I like to think of sermon prep like a percolator. I find that the depth and quality of a message is directly correlated to its time in the percolator. I’ll explain below.

Monday - Start with a Subject & Scripture
On a week that I know I am giving a weekend message I like to begin the process on Monday. On Monday I am thinking about the subject on which I am speaking. I am also setting aside some dedicated time to study the Scripture I will be preaching on. In addition to my historical study of Scripture, this might include reading a commentary or listening to some other respected voices on the subject. I may also do some cultural research. This is typically done in a small block of time in the afternoon.
