“Eagerly desire the spiritual gifts,” Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 14:1, “especially the gift of prophecy.”
What is prophecy? Prophecy, defined in 1 Corinthians 14:3, is “speaking to another on God’s behalf with the purpose of encouraging, strengthening, or comforting them.” If you’ve been in a healthy church, you’ve probably experienced New Testament prophecy, whether you knew it or not!
Why does Paul put such an emphasis on the gift of prophecy? Prophecy is the gateway gift. Hearing from God in new ways opens up new opportunities in our life. When we begin to hear from God, a gateway is created for the other gifts to flow freely.
